Create a Safety Plan: Prepare for Your Escape

Planning for your safety is an essential step in escaping an abusive relationship. A safety plan is a personalized strategy that helps you prepare for the unexpected and ensure your safety when leaving is the safest option.

Here are some important steps to consider as you create your safety plan:

  • Identify a moment when the abuser is not around, or when you can leave without raising suspicion.
  • Make sure you have a safe place to go. This could be a trusted friend’s house, a shelter, or another safe location.
  • Pack essentials: identification, important documents (e.g., birth certificates, passports), medications, and extra clothes. Keep this bag hidden but accessible.
  • If you have children and/or pets, pack their necessities too.
  • Establish a code word or phrase with a trusted friend or family member. When you say this word, they will know to call the authorities or help you escape.
  • Make sure you know multiple ways to leave your home, especially if the abuser has control over one route.
  • If you are worried about your calls or texts being monitored, use a trusted phone or a public phone to contact someone you trust.
  • Use encrypted messaging apps (e.g., Signal, WhatsApp) that provide more privacy.
  • Familiarize yourself with restraining orders and the legal processes available to protect you.
